Our Board

Charlene Welty, President
Charlene founded PAWED in 2000, and has held the position of President since 2002. Her 25 year career with the State of California was devoted to various Health and Human Services programs, including 12 years as the manager of the statewide Adult Day Health Care program. For 16 years, she owned and operated a pet sitting business, and has also worked for animal welfare organizations developing programs for foster care and disaster response.

Charlene and her husband, Bill, have lived in El Dorado County for the past 26 years and share their life with 3 dogs, 6 cats, 1 goat and 2 llamas, all of whom (except the llamas) were adopted from the El Dorado County animal shelter. Their favorite activities are enjoying the beach with their dogs at Bodega Bay and bike rides along the Humbug Creek Trail.

Lisa S. Couper, DVM, Vice President
Lisa has practiced veterinary medicine in El Dorado County since graduating from UC Davis in 1986. From her home in Latrobe she currently runs a mobile, primarily large animal veterinary practice. Lisa is also on the Board of Noah’s Wish and a Captain with the Latrobe Fire Protection District, which compliments her special interests in field emergency treatment of animals and animal rescue. She and her husband Chris also have two horses (outdoors) and two cats (indoors), while their daughter Samantha attends UC Davis. Hobbies include photography, cycling and hiking.

Kelly Adams, Secretary
Kelly and her husband Bill, life-long animal lovers, moved from the East Bay to El Dorado in 2009. Recently retired after 27 years as a Human Resources manager for a major utility company, Kelly now enjoys life in the foothills with her 4 dogs and cat (a motley crew of mixed-breed rescues). A few of Kelly’s favorite things are gardening, Book Club, nature walks, wine tasting, and anything involving dogs. Kelly enjoys her role as PAWED Volunteer Coordinator for EDCAS Shelter, she handles PAWED email and phones, and participates in fostering, rescue, and mobile spay/neuter clinic recovery.

Barbara Phillips – Treasurer
Barbara retired as an office manager in Burbank California and moved to El Dorado County in 1997. She was an animal shelter volunteer in Burbank, so soon became a volunteer at the El Dorado County Animal Shelter. Shortly thereafter, Barbara and her husband Ray became active PAWED members and volunteers. Barb regularly volunteers in the PAWED office and helps keep correspondence up to date and the office organized. Barbara and Ray have fostered 20 dogs, puppies & kittens. They adopted two of the little dogs, a Shih Tzu and a Lhasa /Poodle. They also have two miniature donkeys who like lots of attention.

Janet Kenneweg
Janet has lived in El Dorado County for 17 years with her husband, son, and family pets. She has worked in the Parks and Recreation field for over 30 years and currently manages the El Dorado Hills Senior Center. Janet helped start the Bark in the Park event in 2003, met many PAWED volunteers during the Furry Friends Walk and Bark in the Park events, and became a member PAWED. Janet also raised two puppies for Canine Companions for Independence, but her own dog was extremely jealous, so she had to give it up. Her hobbies include cooking, reading, entertaining friends, and performing in a local hand bell choir.

Michael Damer
Michael Damer and his wife, Jamie Hartshorn, share their home and property with 2 dogs, 3 cats, 3 chickens, 3 alpacas and 5 goats. In addition to caring for the animals, he enjoys gardening, reading, and volunteering for several El Dorado County non-profit organizations.

 

Teri Mizuhara-Smith
Teri works for CAL FIRE as Fire Prevention Specialist II and has lived in the county since 1993. Teri has been on the Board for 3 years and continues to assist PAWED with public relations, marketing and public education programs. She also volunteers for the El Dorado County Animal Shelter, the American River Conservancy and NorCal Aussie Rescue and sits on two additional non-profit boards. Teri and her husband, Bill, live with two rescued aussies and three rescued cats.
